Manned mission
to Mars
We
have a future in space. Man is both limited by the earth in terms of resources
for the future and vulnerable as a species to global disasters, whether
man-made or natural. Also, human beings need a challenge and a vision to
do great things. All goals need to be achievable yet challenging if they
are to motivate us, and a manned mission to Mars is a great but yet very
acheivable goal. Details plans have already been drawn up demonstrating
how mankind can establish a presence on the Red planet within the next
ten years - using existing
technology! See the Mars page for more details.
Non-fossil power
sources
This
is 1999 and the beginning of the end for fossil fuels. Recent reports have
oil drying up within the next ten to twenty years. If you're reading this
you're likely to see it for yourself. I expect a dramatic shift from the
current way of life. Electricity for homes and manufacturing will be generated
in many different ways, so I don't expect to see a change in the house.
Heating will of course change to electricity, and passive solar-heating
will become very important. Our source of plastics, currently fossil fuels,
will change to crop-derived products. Economics of life will be very different.
See the fuels page for more on alternatives to
fossil fuels.
Advancing education
We are
now officially in the information age and the radical changes that this
has made in our everyday lives is huge. Our educational system needs to
be brought right up to date to help young people cope well. This includes
teaching of life skills - money and buying, taxes, negotiation, maps and
information accessing and processing skills. And we also need to teach
our children what was not taught to us - anger and stress management, emotional
coping skills and a sense of how society works. See the education
page for another view of education.
